I've never felt an affinity for horror stories. Not that I hate being scared by a story—but I tend to be more interested in something that ratchets up tension, or maybe something that terrifies rather than horrifies. But one of the first anthologies I decided to try writing for was Fiction River: Feel the Fear, edited by the aforementioned Mark Leslie, who also happens to be a horror aficionado. (I didn't sell my story then—although I was shortlisted—but I did sell it to Daikaijuzine later.) The story was a success regardless, because I'd wanted to challenge myself to write something that truly frightened me...and I did. (With a sci-fi twist, of course.)

What resulted wasn't horror—not exactly. But it tapped into a very personal fear, fear of a future I could see for myself and someone I loved.
